If you have a high hairline it can make you very self conscious and a good way of correcting this is to undergo hairline lowering surgery. There can be a number of reasons for a high hairline including hair loss through anaemia or hormonal problems to previous plastic surgery such as a brow lift. Although men and women know if this problem affects them, many do not realise that there is this type of cosmetic surgery available to resolve the issue.
Anyone, man or woman, who has thick hair other than the high hairline and no hair loss within their family, can be a good candidate for this type of surgery. It can also lift your eyebrows in to a more natural position if you had low brows initially.
There are two types of surgery to correct this problem, either a small part of the skin on the forehead can be removed and the hairline rejoined to the forehead further down or a hair graft can be made to the hairline. It is possible, although not the norm, to carry out both of these at the same time in male surgery while in surgery for women the skin removal is carried out on its own. This is not an easy surgery to do as there needs to be minimal scarring and the blood supply needs to be maintained. However it is normal to only lower the hairline by around one inch.
When removing a strip of skin to bring the hairline forward, a zigzag cut is made just into the beginning of the hairline using a general anaesthetic. The edge of the hair is then sutured inside the wound enabling hair to re-grow in front of and through the scar. By making the cut in this way the scar is very difficult to see and can be covered with the patients existing hair. It usually takes around ten days before the stitches can be removed.
As the skin is taken from just in front of the existing hairline, when the operation is completed the scar is just behind the new hairline. If you choose a surgeon who is experienced in this procedure and uses the latest techniques, any scarring or time off from work should be minimal. When choosing a clinic for your surgery it is worth asking to see any references they can provide from previous patients and also checking that the surgeon is registered with the General Medical Council.
