Spilt Earlobe Repair

What is a Split Earlobe?

The lobe is the lower, fleshy part of the ear that is sometimes pierced. The ear lobe is a delicate piece of skin that is made up of fat and skin. A split earlobe is more likely to happen in those that wear heavy ear jewellery constantly. Splitting can occur either over time through the thin wire of an earing being pulled by the weight of an earring or through trauma such as the jewellery being yanked or snagged suddenly. It is natural for the hole which the jewellery hangs through to stretch slightly over time if the earrings worn are heavy but would only be described as a split ear lobe if the jewellery pulls right through the skin of the lobe causing the tissue to be in two pieces.

Who is at risk of a split ear lobe?

Anyone who wears jewellery a lot of the time is at risk of getting a split ear lobe. The risk is further increased when those wearing ear jewellery take part in sports or in a lot of physical activity without removing their jewellery first. Wearing large earrings around small children or animals mean that there is more risk of the earrings being yanked suddenly as children are often be attracted to pulling on things that dangle and animals might catch them during play with their claws or paws.

Treatment for Split Earlobe Repair

The earlobe is one of the places on the body that can heal easily, as demonstrated by the quick healing of piercings in the lobe. Sometimes an earlobe split will repair itself however, this might cause the appearance of the repair to be irregular and might leave more scar tissue than is necessary. If the split occurs over time and the skin inside the wound has time to heel before the final split in the lobe is made, the surgeon will have to cut away the heal tissue inside the split to reveal a raw edge that will allow the skin to knit itself back together. If the split in the lobe is sudden and bleeding or pussing occurs, it may be possible to start the repair process immediately but in most cases the wound will need to be left to heal fully before and repair procedures can take place.

The cost of Earlobe Repair

The cost of earlobe repair surgery will depend on the extent of the damage and how the split occurred in the first place. If the split happened over time through a piercing the procedure is likely to be considered a cosmetic operation. If the split occurred as the result of an accident the cost of repair would probably be covered under personal health insurance or under your national state health system.
